Gears and COD3 Part 2: Multiplayer

As always I appreciate the comments you guys left on my last posting.  A couple of you posed questions asking what my thoughts were on the multiplayer portions of both of these games.  So I thought I should do a follow up posting on that.

    Gears of War

The multiplayer for this game is very basic but can be fun.  You have three modes.  Warzone, Execution and Assasination.  All are team based with a maximum of 8 players (4 one each side).  Warzone is basic team deathmatch.  If you get shot down, you can be revived by a teammate before you bleed out.  However, if you are chainsawed to death, curbstomped by an enemy or if you're body is somehow destroyed in another way thus rendering you unrevivable.  Execution is basically the same as Warzone but with a couple twists.  The first is that you can revive yourself and the second is that you can only be killed by either bleeding out or being rendered unrevivable.

Assasination is probably the most interesting mode.  Each team has a leader.  During the game, only the leader may pick up weapon pick ups.  However, if they choose to drop that weapon, another team mate can pick up the weapon.

The game retains much of it's beauty online and plays very smoothly.  We've had full rooms of 4 people and even with a lot of action on the screen, it had no visible lag.  The reason why I stated previously that I don't see this game having a lot of legs online, at least for me personally, is because of how limited the multiplayer modes are.  After playing each for about an hour at a time, I was getting bored.  I also do not like the fact that if I want to switch game modes, you have to kill the lobby and start a new one.  The host options are extremely limited.  This will definately be a game in small doses for me but the single player is still fantastic as hell and well worth those reviews.

    Call of Duty 3

I haven't had a chance to play a lot of this online but I have tried deathmatch and War.  War mode is where there are certain number of control points.  Each team starts the game with the same amount, i.e. they'll each one and there will be a neutral third one.  If the Axis captures the neutral point, then the point controlled by the Allies will be put up for grabs.  If the Axis takes control of it, they win.  If they Allies take control of it, then a control point held by the Axis will be made available.  This continues until one team has control of all the points.  I played this game mode last night with 17 other people and it played very well.  No lag or anything.  Just great gaming.

COD3 also has class based characters for multiplayer with each class coming with different weapons or abilities.  The medic for example comes with the ability to heal fallen teammates.  Getting to used to each class will provide extra legs to the multiplayer I believe.

So in conclusion,  I enjoy both games online but COD3 is the winner by far for me but in fairness to Gears, it wasn't exactly intended to be known for its multiplayer.  I hope my comments are of help to you guys.

Gears and COD3 and Other Stuff

Well the time that all of us 360 owners have been waiting for is finally here and Gears of War has finally been released.  As I'm sure most of you have seen by now, this game has received nothing but stellar reviews and appears to be living up to the hype so far.   The graphics are incredible, the sound is amazing and it just plays really, really well.  The duck and cover gameplay is a lot of fun and is definately different.  From what I've played of the singe player campaign, I'm having a lot of fun.  I've had a chance to play a little co-op online and some of the other multiplayer game modes.  While they are fun, I really don't see the online having legs.  In fact I was getting bored of it on Friday after only playing for an hour or so.  Don't get me wrong, I'm amazed at how well this game plays online and it retains most of it's offline beauty in the process.

I'll admit though that I haven't played a lot of the campaign in Gears and the reason for that is Call of Duty 3.  Dare I say that I may even be enjoying this more than Gears.  I realize it's just another WWII shooter but that is just fine by me.  I'm really enjoying the implementation of vehicles in this game.  I'm also liking a few of the other additions to the game.  One is the hand to hand combat.  I think it just adds another element to the game.  Treyarch did a great job in taking over from Infinity Ward for this edition of the game and that's saying a lot because Call of Duty 2 is one of the top FPSes of all time in my books.

In none gaming news, the Maple Leafs beat the stupid Montreal Canadiens again last night and are off to a great start this season.  GO LEAFS GO!!!

Also I saw Flushed Away today and really enjoyed it.  Great movie for the kiddies.  I have never seen any of the Wallace and Grommit movies but this was really funny and had some the usual jokes that only adults will pick up one.

    Time to Give Back!!!

    Hey everyone,

As you know the holidays are coming up and it's not always the best time of year for everyone for a variety of reasons.  While I realize there a wide variety of ways to give back at this time of the year, I would just like to point out one way that you can do so and that is the Child's Play charity that the guys over at Penny Arcade run every year.  Although since I know the majority of people who stop by here are gamers themselves, you guys will most likely know about it already.  They have started the drive again this year and I just wanted to make mention of this in case you wanted to contribute and help them out.  If they don't a hospital in your area, maybe you could find a way for one to be included.  They now have hospitals all over the world and I just think it's a really good thing.  Even if you don't approve of giving games to children, they have non-gaming items in each hospital's Amazon wish lists such as books and DVDs.

If there are other charities that you would like to make others aware of, please post a link to them in the comments area of this entry.  Thanks everyone.
