    Full Auto

Picked up a copy of Full Auto for the 360 this week.  I am very impressed by this game. I have read a lot of user reviews and many have been very harsh to say the least.  Many people have complained of the lack of a story line.  I guess they have never played Burnout as it doesn't have a story line either.

The graphics, while not mind blowing, are still very good. The sound effects are very impressive.  Nice and loud.  The steering itself is very much the same as Burnout, although not quite as good.

My only real complaint about the game is the lack of weopan selection.  I wish they could be customized a little more than they are but that's something that is not the end of the world though.

Overall, I am really enjoying this game and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys Burnout and/or the Twisted Metal series.

    The Week that Was

Not much happened this week.  I guess not that much happens usually anyways.  I finally bought Guitar Hero.  I've spent most of the week since I picked it up on Wednesday playing it.  It is one amazing game.  Hard as hell though. Easy mode was pretty easy but once I moved up to medium it got really difficult.  I think it could be that I am not co-ordinated enough.  I've never played a single note on a guitar before this game and that may be why.  Anyways, even though I am having some trouble with it, I am still loving it.  The music is incredible from Cowboys from Hell to Thunderkiss '65.  I've never played anything with this great a selection of music.  Although, I guess it's a little different than regular games.

I finally watched Doom yesterday on DVD.  It wasn't great but it wasn't horrible either.  The creatures looked great.  Just like in the game.  The acting was the main drawback for the movie.  The first person perspective towards the end really wasn't all that bad either.  Maybe it's because I went into it with low expectations and tere wasn't a lot of room for disappointment.  I don't think I would buy it brand new for full price but I would buy it used or a discount.

I also watched Saw II this week as well.  Just as good as I remember it from the theatres.  Even though I already knew the ending I still loved it.  Not as much as the first one of course.  Then again, not too many sequels are as good as the original.

I haven't really played my 360 much this week either.  Not too many games out there right now that I am interested in.  That's going to change though hopefully soon.  There's a bunch of games coming out in March that I plan on picking up.  Burnout Revenge, Far Cry Instincts and Ghost Recon Advanced Warrior all look fantastic.  I was going to pick up Blazing Angels but it has been delayed a few months.  While that is disappointing, if it makes the game better then I guess it's worth it.

I've been contemplating getting rid of my PSP but I know that the minute I do, something will come out that I will want for it.  Then again maybe I should just get rid it of on Ebay and make some money from it.  If I trade it in at a store they'll give me half of what they'll turn around and sell it for. Hopefully the 1Gb memory stick will increase the $$$ I can get for it.

Our hockey team hasn't been doing to well the last couple of games.  I know that some people are going to try and blame the betting scandal for it but I think that is bogus and a lame excuse.  One has nothing to do with the other.  But then again this is only the preliminary rounds and there is plenty of time to go and we will still win Gold.

Anyways that's pretty much the week that was.

    Today's Horror Movies

I went and saw Final Destination 3 last night and it got me thinking about the horror movies that come out today.  First, I'll give a quick overview of the movie. Overall, I think that it was well done for a teen horror movie.  It had everything one could expect from this type of movie: violence, creative deaths, stupid teens and gratuitous nudity.  Granted it was pretty much the same as the first two movies plot wise, it had its differences. The horrific incident that the main character has a premonition of happening was different and the method in which they figure out the order everyone is going to die is done in a different way as well.

The one thing that disappointed me with Final Destination 3, however, is that there were no real suspenseful moments that made you sit up in anticipation of what my happen next.  The types of scenes that make people jump in their seats.  An example, would be the killer in a movie jumping out of no where to get their victim.  There's just something about being a full theatre that just jumps in their seats all at once.

This movie is definately not on the same level as some other recent horror movies such as Hostel, the Devil's Rejects, the Saw movies or Cabin Fever, all of which I recommend for any horror movie fan.  One thing I am definately finding over the past few years is that it is the horror movies with the lowest budgets that have been impressing me the most such as the Saw movies and Cabin Fever.  Even House of 1000 Corpses and the Devil's Rejects were made on very small budgets and I loved them.  The latter more so than the former. Hell, even Ebert and Roeper gave two thumbs up to the Devil's Rejects.

That's not to say that that all of the horror movies in recent years have been great.  I didn't care too much for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake.  I absolutely loved the original, one of my favourites and I didn't think they did it justice.  I haven't seen the Ring movies and I don't know if I am really interested in them.  I know I don't want to see When a Stranger Calls.  I guess one of the bad things about horror movies being successful at the box office recently is that Hollywood feels the need to oversaturate the market with them.  The same thing happened after Jaws.  Next thing you know people who go in the water are being killed by everything from an octupus to genetically engineered pirhana (a movie which is being remade for a second time this year).  Then again not all remakes are a bad thing.  The Dawn of the Dead remake was fantastic.

To wrap things up, I'm thinking that this could be one of the best years for horror movies yet with all of the horror movies slated to come out this year such as The Hills Have Eyes (I realize this a remake but the director is Alexandre Aja who directed the fantastic High Velocity), See No Evil, Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel [provided it is better than the remake was] and Saw 3.

    Arcade Games

    Introduction

Welcome to my first blog.  I've never had a blog before, so this is new to me.  I hope to be able to update it at least once a week touching on topics from movies to videogames to music to just about anything that makes me want to express my thoughts.  Such as people who feel it necessary to send e-mails on their PDAs while driving their cars.  You will find that I go off on tangents or rant about things (see previous sentence) but I do hope that you enjoy what I have to say.  I welcome any and all comments anyone may have even if it's a simple "hey fuckwad, you suck".  I'm always interested/curious what people have to say.  Now it's time I get going on my first topic.

    Main Topic

Kids today just don't get the arcade experience anymore like when I was younger.  It could be that games don't cost below a dollar anymore (at least in Canada) but mainlyI think it has to do with the ability to play arcade quality games at home on any one of the consoles available for purchase.  Back in the early 90s, consoles such as the Super Nintendo could rarely meet arcade games in terms of graphics.  That is just my opinion, I realize some people with disagree with me.  If people didn't disagree with other people, then the world would be a very boring place and I would be out of a job as law clerk.  As good as the first Rare games were on the SNES, Cruisin' USA and Killer Instinct were still a better experience in the arcade.

A friend of mine and I were discussing this week about the decline of arcade games and the ones we played when we were younger (late80s, early 90s mainly).  We both agreed that one of our favourite arcade games was WWF Wrestlefest.  I probably spent a few hundred dollars on that game in quarters.  It is still my favourite wrestling game of all time.  I know that the controls are simple and there is not a wide variety of moves available but I think that was the appeal to me.  It is still a fun game.  I found a version of it that I could download onto my computer.  Once I loaded it up, it took me right back to being a 10 year old in the arcade with a pocket full of quarters. How I miss those carefree days even though my girlfriend Mary likes to put it as money I will never get back.

Who could forget playing games such as T2 in the arcade where you stand there with the gun in hand.  It was never that fun on the Genesis with the Menacer (a rip off in my humble opinion).  If I had the space, I would have arcade games all over the place.  Or how about a game such as Rad Mobile or After Burner.  There was no way to duplicate those games at home properly without buying the machines themselves.

There used to be 2 or 3 arcades within a walking distance of where I live.  Now the only place I can play arcade games is at movie theatres and Playdium.  I haven't been to playdium in quite a while (over 7 years) but I do plan on going back there again.  Anyone who lives in the Toronto area (although it is in Missisauga where I live) will know what I am talking about when I reference Playdium.  I used to love going there.  They had a huge arcade area including an F1 game in the same mold as Daytona but you would sit in a the full car not just a seat.  So as the car moved in the game, the one you were sitting in would move as well.  They also have a batting cage, miniature golf and go karts.  I wasn't too impressed with the go karts as there were too many turns to get any real speed. If anyone is interested in visiting Playdium, the website is www.playdium.com.

In conclusion, I guess I just miss the days of my youth (now that I am an old fart at 25) of going to the arcade during lunch or after school and putting quarter after quarter in the machine for some gaming bliss.........even if it was very shortlived. Until next time.
