August 28 Movie Review: BeerfestWhile it's no Super Troopers, it was still better than Club Dread. Sure it was tasteless and offensive, but what else would you expect from these guys and a movie about not much else but drinking beer. It was funny as hell though and if you like this type of movie, you should definately check it out. Stay through the credits though if you love those blooper reels that people include in them sometimes. August 24 Sean's Horror Recommendations, Part 2I'm finally getting around to this. I haven't had much time this week with Madden and Poker coming out. So now I'll get one with the list of some of my favourite horror movies of all time. I won't be putting them in any particular order either:
Saw and Saw II
The Hills Have Eyes (2006)
High Tension
Friday the 13th
Psycho (more of a thriller I know)
The Birds
Jaws
House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects
Halloween
Nightmare on Elm Street
Underworld and Underworld: Evolution
Slither
The Descent
Monster Squad (horror comedy I know)
Hellraiser
Candyman
Pet Semetary
Alien/Aliens
Night of the Living Dead/Dawn of the Dead/Day of the Dead/Land of the Dead
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Evil Dead/Evil Dead 2/Army of Darkness
Shaun of the Dead
Dead Alive
I'm sure I'm missing some. I think these are definately the tops for me though. Hopefully this'll help you in your horror movie viewing decisions.
August 23 REMINDER!!!Just a reminder to everyone to get their Texas Hold 'Em while it's free. Got mine this morning before work and played a few hands. Initial impressions are good. Hopefully going to play online tonight. August 20 Sean's Horror RecommendationsToday I thought I'd do a post of a different sort. I figured I should share with all of you a list of my favourite horror movies plus my thoughts on the horror movies that have been released so far this year in the theatres that I've seen. I got this idea after being lucky enough to discuss horror movies with some friends lately who enjoy them as much as I do. Not a lot of people I know like them as much as I do. I'm going to do the lists in two posts to keep it from getting too long. The first list will be my picks of 2005. Sean's Horror Picks of 2005 Now, I haven't seen every horror movie that's been released in the theatres this year, but I have seen a lot of them. Of course I've already posted my thoughts on them here after seeing them so I'll keep this brief. I have ranked them in the order I liked them. 1) The Hills Have Eyes This is one of the best horror movies I have ever seen. It was gory as hell but creepy as well. I think it is as close to a perfect horror movie as you can get. Sure it didn't have the gratuitous nudity everyone expects, but it was needed. Just solid overall. 2) The Descent Creepy as hell and just the right amount of gore. Definately one I would recommend to all horror fans. 3) Slither/Snakes on a Plane I put these movies together as they're rather the same type of movie. They're horror comedies. They're both fantastic and I enjoyed them both greatly. 4) Final Destination 3 This was a fairly cool movie with some inventive deaths. The second though is probably my favourite in the series. This is your typical horror movie with predictable deaths and gratuitous nudity. Still I enjoyed it all the same. 5) See No Evil This movie was pretty poorly done. It had a few cool spots and the acting wasn't too bad. Overall, it was rather crappy. I guess it's to be expected from a movie directer by a former porn director. 6) Silent Hill Now I've been told that in order to enjoy this movie you have to have played the games. Well I never played the games, so needless to say I did not enjoy this movie. I'm purely speaking from a horror movie perspective here. Sure it had some creepy moments and some spots of gore but overall I couldn't stand it. I even had a couple drinks before the movie and I was bored out of my mind. This was truly disappointing considering it had a decent cast and a good director. I think that's it for now. Hope I haven't missed anything. August 19 Transformers AnnouncedYesterday, the screenwriters for the upcoming Transformers movie (well as upcoming as a movie coming out in one year can be) held a press conference over the web to announce which Transformers will be in the movie. I'll get to the list in just a second, but first I'd like to give my thoughts on the movie. When I first heard they were going to be making a live action Transformers movie I was a little worried. The Transformers were one of the most important things of my childhood next to He-Man and Hulk Hogan. I watched them every day after school. I used to put sticks in the sleeves of long sleeve shirts and pretend I was Star Scream. In case you're wondering what the hell I'm talking, I'm sure you can find a pic of him anywhere you want.
The one toy I always wanted as a child was the original Optimus Prime. I could never find it. They released a different version of Prime, which I of course bought out of desperation. I was a kid and I needed a toy of my hero. I'm sure we've all been there.
This of course will not be the first Transformers movie. Back in 1986 they released Transformers: The Movie. I still watch this movie from time to time. I have a VHS copy but in November they're apparently releasing a 20th anniversary DVD. I still remember watching it as child and crying because for some reason they felt it necessary to have Optimus Prime killed. It was quite traumatic.
Anyways, without any further ado, ladies and gentlemen I proudly present to you the list of which Transformers will be in the movie:
Autobots
Optimus Prime Bumblebee Jazz Ratchet Ironhide Decepticons Megatron Starscream Brawl Bonecrusher Barricade Scorponok Frenzy Blackout I think this quite an impressive list and it sure has me excited about the movie. I guess we all know where I'll be on July 4, 2007. Movie Review: Snakes on a PlaneThe movie all of us internet geeks have been waiting all year for has finally been released. Of course the movie I speak of is Motherf'n Snakes on a Motherf'n Plane starring the coolest man on the planet Samuel L. Jackson. This movie gives you exactly what you expect. Cheesy dialogue, acting and f/x? Check? Gore? Check? Boobies? Check. It takes about 40 minutes for the snake action to start as they have to establish the "story". But once it starts, it never stops. Jackson was awesome as usual. Dave "Champ Kind" Koechner was awesome as one of the co-pilots. He had some of the best lines of the movie. As cool as the movie is (if you like these movies), the best part was being in a full crowd full of people who were way into the movie. I knew it was a good crowd when everyone went nuts for the Borat trailer. If you can see this in the near future when the crowds are good, I highly suggest you do it. The place exploded when the most famous line of the movie was uttered. August 16 Texas Hold 'Em Still For FreeWell for the first 48 hours anyways. 1up.com has confirmed that the upcoming Texas Hold 'Em will be free for the first 48 hours (Wednesday, August 22 - Friday, August 24 at 6:00 p.m.). You can read the story here. I'm definately more interested in this than I was. Since it's free, I can hardly say no. I'm not a huge poker fan, but I'm looking forward to playing 8 person games. It'll be hard to take over my virtual card playing time from Uno though.
On a Space related note, I've deleted the list of MSN spaces that was on the right of my Space. I think everyone in those lists is now in my Friends list. If I've missed anyone or you want to be in my friends list, please feel free to send me the request. August 13 Quick Movie Reviews (I've been slacking, I know)I've seen some movies the last few weeks that I haven't posted my thoughts on yet. I'll try and cover them all for you in this post. So far it's been a good summer for movies. I think I've only been a little disappointed with one movie so far as you'll see in this post. I sure do go to a lot movies don't I. What can I say, I love movies and try to watch as many as I can. This weekend I'll be checking out Snakes on a Plane. Anyways, on with the reviews. I hope they help you guys in your movie going decisions.
Clerks II
This had to be one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. Was it as good as the first one you might ask? Well that's hard to say since it's almost a different style of movie. It had a lot in common with the first one, such as the witty banter, but it also had a lot different with it too. Randal was the true star of the movie again. It's a shame he doesn't do more. He's one funny mofo. This movie is definately not for the easily offended as Smith definately pushes a lot of buttons and the envelope of taste more than ever. This was also probably one of the best performances I've ever seen Rosario Dawson give too. Jay and Silent Bob were great as well. Anyone who is a fan of Smith's movies should definately check this out. Miami Vice
This was a fantastic movie. It had great imagery and an incredible soundtrack...staples of a Michael Mann movie. He is definately one of my favourite directors. The choreography was amazing as well. The acting was good and the script wasn't exactly perfect but the action scenes more than made up for that. The movie did have some elements from the show such as the cool music, fast cars, faster boats and fashionable clothes that represent the times it takes place in. Thankfully there was not a pastel in sight. While I don't think this movie was as good as Collateral or Heat, it was still great entertainment. Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby
Gotta say I was a little disappointed. It was nearly 2 hours long and that was probably too much. Sure it had it's funny moments, mainly involving Sacha Baren Cohen (Ali G) as the french race car driver. This was not nearly as funny as Anchorman or 40 Year Old Virgin. I guess it needed Steve Carell. I wish that I had just waited until video for it now. I guess I was just expecting more. I think Will Ferrell needs to have someone other than himself involved in the writing of his movies. I think it would help out more.
I've had a chance to think about this movie some more since I first saw it and while it is funnier than I had thought, I think it just wasn't what I had hoped it could be.
The Descent
This was one of the creepiest/freakiest horror movies I've seen in a while. This movie was written and directed by Neal Marshall who gave us the movie Dog Soldiers. It's (The Descent) probably the second best horror movie I've seen this year in the theatre after the Hills Have Eyes remake, which is probably one of my top horror movies of all time. The Descent had cool make up f/x and loads of gore. The ending was a little rushed but otherwise the rest of the movie was paced out well. This movie was not just freaky because of the gore, but just the claustophobic scenes in the caves will get to you as well. Anyone who likes horror movies should definately check this one out. Ready....Set....Hut!!!I picked up NCAA Football this year for the first time shortly before I went away on my little trip. Unfortunately, before I went away I didn't really have a chance to play it too much. I played one game against a friend of mine on Live and a few exhibition matches. However, since last weekend I've been playing a game on Live a night practically. I now have a record of 4-4 on Live against my friends. It is a great game to play with friends who don't take it too seriously and just play it for fun.
I haven't tried the Dynasty (season) mode yet, but I am definately looking forward to it. I have no real allegiance to any college team as I am Canadian and I've never been a big NCAA football follower. So I've decided that I will make Notre Dame my team of choice. RUDY!! RUDY!! RUDY!!!
The only real complaint I have with the game so far is that when I do play it on Live I've noticed it has some real balance issues. Sometimes the QB will do nothing but throw interceptions. Other times, the refs will call way too many penalties. However, I am willing to look past these as it is a lot of fun.
So being the huge football fan that I am, I have broken down and given in to temptation. Yep, I'm also picking up Madden this year as well. Last year's was a little disappointing but I believe they've made enough improvements this year that it should be a lot of fun. There should be a lot of pigskin action my 360 for quite a while. Although we can't forget about hockey too. :) August 11 PSA TimeI was watching tv this afternoon when I saw a commercial that really caught my attention. No it wasn't for a fancy car, a tasty beer or a hot new video game. It was a commercial for a website for parents about to control what your kids view on tv. The website, TheTVBoss, explains everything from how V-Chips work to what each of the ratings mean. The only reason why I bring this up is because I think it is very important for parents to know what their kids are watching. The same goes for movies they watch, what they view on the internet and of course what games they play. I'm tired of people using these things as a babysitter for their kids. I realize we're all very busy but nothing should be more important that your children. Sorry to get all preachy here, but the more people understand things like this, the better the enjoyment is for everyone. August 09 Chrome Scratch FeverAs those of you who are on my 360 friends list may have noticed, I've been playing a lot of Chromehounds lately. The weekend before last we actually had at least 8 people in our squad room at 2:00 a.m. That is unbelievable. No game has gripped the Tehbias community quite like this. Not even GRAW, although we have put our share of time into that one as well. There's just something about Chromehounds that is so much fun and it is a deep game. One thing I do love about it is that you can work on your hounds while talking with your squadmates. Whether you're just shooting the shit or exchanging ideas about how best to build a hound, it's a lot of fun.
The game does have it's problems that have been covered on some other spaces, such as the less than friendly menus and systems. The only thing that really bugs me is that when you're in a battle, you can't tell who your teammates are. I refuse to believe that people who invented this impressive hounds could not come up with a system to tell each other apart. What we've done though is one of us created a colour scheme that we've all adopted. I doubt anyone else will come up with this colour scheme. Trust me on that one.
I've also been playing some NCAA the last three nights with some friends online. This game is a lot of fun and I'll be getting Madden as well. I love football. Although I wasn't going to pick Madden up as well, I figure why not. I need my NFL action.
One thing I'm trying to decide is which NHL game to pick up this year since both are out for the 360. I'll probably get the same as my friends so that I can play them online but I think I need to look into them more. It'll probably be 2K's version though. Usually the better of the two although EA is getting better each year.
Lastly, I've started to figure out all of this new spaces stuff such as the friend's list. I've slowly started sending out requests. If you sent me one previously and I didn't accept, I apologize. I just noticed this morning that they seem to be going into my spam folder which I don't really check over before emptying. After I came back from my trip though, I had so much spam I just deleted it all. Stupid viagra offers. August 05 What the....?I go away for a few days and when I get back what do I find? My space has gone all to hell with this new look. It looks ok but I had to change the theme so I could see all of the writing on it. Not a big deal but I can't say I was expecting it. Anyways, as some of you know I went to Boston and NYC this past week to catch a Red Sox game and a Yankees game and do some general sightseeing. Here's a few photos for you guys. The first ones'll be from Boston and then NYC. First is a pic from Fenway, the next is Acorn St. in Boston's rich Beacon Hill neighbourhood. Apparently this is the most photographed street in America. John Kerry owns a home in Beacon Hill. Next is a pic from Yankee Stadium followed by a pic from Times Square. This one is my favourite of the whole trip. ;) I hope you like them. It was a great trip but I think I liked Boston better than NYC. Something about that city really spoke to me. It's really quite beautiful. I could see myself living there. I'll probably put more pics up as I get them resized and everything. |
